He started his professional career as a teacher in the village of Suchdol, later in Červené Pečky and in Solopysky. Besides, he gave the piano and violin lessons. This was also the time when he established himself as a composer and while this activity consumed still more of his time, he eventually quitted the job of a teacher. He moved to Kolín, where in 1871 he founded his small band, a year later he became a conductor of Sokol band (Sokol - Czech patriotic & P.T. organization), and in 1874 he was appointed as the conductor of municipal orchestra. Under his supervision, the orchestra extended to dancing, string and wind sections and as such the orchestra also performed. The most famous became wind orchestra section playing during the folk celebrations, weddings, funerals; it was, however, used during the feasts & venues in the town of Kolín and its neighborhood, in the city of Prague and also abroad. František Kmoch left quite a large number of compositions, some of them becoming very popular. Among the best known, tunes such as “Kolíne, Kolíne”, “Pode mlejnem”, “Andulko šafářová”, “Muziky, muziky”, waltzer “Na stříbropěnném Labi”, and various Sokol marches can be found. At the verge of his life Kmoch unfortunately suffered a great health disorders. He died 30th April 1912 and is buried at the Municipal Cemetery of Kolín.

Frantisek Kmoch





Born 1st August, 1848 in Zásmuky near the town of Kolín. His extraordinary musical talents became apparent during his trivia studies already. He later continued at the grammar school of Kolín and the Teacher Academy of Prague.
